Top 10 – Coldplay

I’ve been listening to Coldplay a bit obsessively for the past few days – on the way to work, while stuck in traffic, at my cubicle while tapping my feet, cooling down after a run, before going to sleep etc., etc.

I first discovered Coldplay back in university when their anthemic single, Yellow came out, and everyone was calling them the new Travis (what ever happen to them?). Or even the new, more palatable Radiohead. Their first album, Parachutes, is so beautiful and moving – and just when I thought they couldn’t top it, they came out with A Rush Of Blood To The Head, which propelled them into the mainstream, gaining them international acclaim and recognition.

So much so, that Chris Martin went off and married Gwyneth Paltrow. I recall P. Diddy introducing them at the Grammys as “the only band who can make me cry” and Justin Timberlake painfully mimicking Martin's signature piano thumping head banging moves in one of his live performances. The band's overexposure following their Grammy win for Clocks and Martin's Bono-like canvassing of the fair trade cause was met with some distaste and backlash from the band's indie die-hard fans.

Their third album, X&Y, though producing great singles like Speed of Sound and Fix You, didn’t quite reach the same heights as their previous albums.

But I am happy to find that with the release of their latest album Viva La Vida or Death And All His Friends, Coldplay is back on form. It’s a bit edgier and more raw, with some Hispanic, African and heavier influences then in their previous work. I am currently loving Strawberry Swing, Lost! and Viva La Vida.

One of the best moments of my life was when I managed to catch their concert in Singapore about 2 years ago on their Twisted Logic tour. I recall getting into a debate with A, who had watched them earlier that year during the Spanish leg of their tour, on who was closer to the stage i.e. closer to Chris Martin. I maintain that I was pretty close to the stage, close enough to make out Chris Martin’s facial expressions. But A is convinced that he was close enough to catch the sweat being flung off Chris Martin’s body from the stage and into the crowd. Ew. I suppose I can’t beat that.

I suppose what I love about Coldplay's music is that they make the kind of music that permeates your soul. That has the ability to offer hope in times of despair, and uplift when you need to be inspired. Also, you can cry, but you can also dance (like Chris Martin's weird chicken/robot dance) to their music.

This was a very difficult list to make, but I’ve managed to whittle it down to the following:

Top Ten Coldplay Songs:

1. Amsterdam
2. Shiver
3. Fix You
4. Everything’s Not Lost
5. Strawberry Hill
6. Politik
7. God Put A Smile On Your Face
8. Warning Sign
9. Yellow
10. The Scientist

What are your favorite Coldplay songs?

The Scientist is my favourite Coldplay song of all time. I'm still trying to find the equivalent in Viva La Vida. No luck so far :(
Second place goes to Warning Sign.

I was at their SG concert too. One of the best experiences ever.
